How to help patients get in and out of wheelchairs

Patients who have been bedridden for a long time are prone to complications such as bedsores, muscle atrophy and joint stiffness. Therefore, wheelchairs can be used to allow bedridden patients to go outdoors regularly to promote blood circulation and physical recovery.
It should be noted that assisting patients in getting in and out of wheelchairs is only suitable for those who are unable to walk but can sit up.
Step 1: Check the wheelchair
First, check whether all parts of the wheelchair are in good condition, whether the brakes are fixed, look at the footrests, push the front wheels of the wheels, push the wheelchair to the end of the bed, make the backrest level with the foot of the bed, and the opening should face the head of the bed.
Step 2: Help the patient sit up
Assist the patient to sit up, turn around, hang the legs on the edge of the bed, and put shoes on the patient.
Step 3: Help the patient get into the wheelchair
Help the patient sit in the wheelchair. During the operation, pay attention to protecting the operator's body. Follow the principle of attention control. The operator should separate the front and back, rest one leg on the patient's leg, place the patient's hands on the operator's shoulders and apply force together. Let the patient gently press the operator's shoulders. The operator should cross their hands on the patient's waist and get up together. Help the patient onto the wheelchair, hold the handrail with one hand, and gently support the patient to sit on the wheelchair.
Step 4: Assist the patient to sit down
Turn the foot pedal, place the patient's foot on the pedal, instruct the patient to sit down and lean backward, hold the handrail with both hands. If the patient is weak, a restraint strap can be fastened, then release the brake, and the patient can be pushed out for movement.
Note: When the weather is cold, add clothes to the patient in time to prevent them from catching a cold. After the activity, the same method can be used to help the patient get back to bed.
