Combating Geriatric Obesity Worldwide: International Projects Promote Healthy Old Age

In response to the growing issue of elderly obesity amid global population aging, multiple countries have launched innovative intervention programs. Adopting scientific, age-friendly and diversified health management solutions, these initiatives address elderly obesity and its secondary health risks, advancing the development of healthy aging worldwide.
As the global elderly population continues to expand, elderly obesity has evolved into a major global public health challenge. Unlike general obesity, obesity in seniors significantly increases the risks of chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and osteoarthropathy, while causing muscle loss and reduced mobility, which severely undermine older adults’ quality of life. The World Health Organization has repeatedly stressed that weight management for the elderly should avoid extreme weight loss and prioritize physical function preservation and improved health in later life.
To tackle this challenge precisely, countries have rolled out localized innovative programs, forming a new pattern of cross-border collaboration on elderly health intervention. Many European and American countries have adopted digital, senior-friendly weight management models. Leveraging smart monitoring devices to collect data on metabolism and body composition, authorities tailor mild diet and exercise regimens based on seniors’ physical tolerance, abandoning traditional one-size-fits-all weight-loss methods to achieve scientific and healthy weight control.
Countries in Southeast and Southern Europe focus on inclusive community services. They have established community elderly health service centers to provide free obesity screenings, nutritional counseling and health education, as well as low-intensity fitness courses, helping seniors gradually develop healthy lifestyles. Meanwhile, medical authorities worldwide are updating clinical criteria for elderly obesity management, incorporating physical function, mental health and muscle retention into evaluation systems, shifting the focus from disease treatment to comprehensive health maintenance.
Obesity is no longer an occasional individual problem, but a structural global health challenge shaped by environmental, institutional and lifestyle factors. The prevalence of high-calorie processed food, sedentary urban lifestyles, and unequal access to health resources have collectively fueled the spread of obesity, making it a systemic issue rather than a failure of personal discipline.
Against the backdrop of globalization, this universal challenge presents both pressure and a vital opportunity for China to advance the Healthy China Initiative. As a major country with a population of 1.4 billion, China’s obesity prevention and control outcomes affect not only national well-being but also global public health. While drawing on advanced international experience, China develops tailored prevention and control strategies suited to its demographic structure, dietary culture and national conditions. Joint efforts from the government, society and individuals are essential: implementing targeted policies for key groups including children and adolescents, improving food nutrition labeling systems to guide healthy consumption, strengthening community-hospital cooperation to build continuous health management systems, and optimizing public health environments to make healthy dieting and regular exercise a daily norm.
There are no shortcuts to tackling obesity. Sustained institutional efforts, integrated with international experience and localized innovation, are essential to consolidate the foundation of national health, empower the Healthy China Initiative, and contribute Chinese wisdom and solutions to global obesity prevention.
